CHINA TELECOM AND AFGHANISTAN TELECOM START FIBER OPTIC CABLE PROJECT
Recently, China Telecom and its partners in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan completed the signing of the Silk Road Optical Cable Cooperation Agreement and substantively launched the Silk Road Optical Cable Project. China Telecom is furthering its cooperation with regional partners in the field of communications and information in order to implement the country’s “Belt and Road Initiative”. The launch of the “Silk Road Cable Project” marks a milestone in the key projects of the Digital Silk Road in the “Belt and Road” region.
On September 25, 2017, China Telecom and Afghanistan Telecom signed the Silk Road Optical Cable Cooperation Agreement and China Telecom’s Afghanistan Telecom Strategic Cooperation Agreement at the Afghan Embassy in China. Recently, China Telecom signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Kyrgyzstan, Tajik Telecom Operators Exchange of relevant supplementary texts. Mr. Xiao Wei, Deputy General Manager of International Department of China Telecom Group, and Mr. Jia Nan Mozazai, Ambassador of Afghanistan to China, authorized by Afghan Telecom, signed the above agreement on behalf of both parties.
“Silk Road Cable Project” is a key project of the “Digital One Road” regional digital Silk Road in China Telecom. In view of the problems of “continuous but not continuous” and “unblocked” of traditional cross-border terrestrial optical cable, China Telecom innovates the mode of land and cable cooperation. Through the mechanism of “capacity bank” and the principle of “sharing, building together and sharing” Together with our partners, we will build a new multi-terrestrial optical cable system across Central Asia, South Asia and West Asia, to achieve network interconnection among countries along the routes and to provide landlocked countries with access to sea ports directly linked to submarine landing stations. Starting from Urumqi, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kabul, the capital of the Silk Road project, will be further extended to other countries in Central Asia, South Asia and West Asia in the future and reach the Middle East, Africa and Europe by sea and land. China Telecom has signed cooperation agreements with Silk Road optical fiber cables with partners in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan and formed a Silk Road Optical Cable Management Committee. Up to now, the Silk Road optical cable project has completed the on-the-spot investigation of transmission routes in China, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
